How to move Google Play Services and Google Maps to sd card on Android phone

$

0
This guide applies to moving any application to sd card. Yes, ANY application! Before you start getting excited or looking for my magic trick, you need to be rooted. I know this is a dealbreaker for many of you, but hey, rooting is really cool!

If you want to get more advanced and want to move full apps to sd card, try this guide instead. I used the word full apps because normally when you move any app to sd card, some component of it is still stored in your internal memory. So, if you are really low on storage space, and want to install a lot of apps, refer the guide I linked above.

Move Any Android App to sd card and free phone storage

Google Maps moved to sd card
Google Play services moved to the sd card

  • Enable Usb Debugging on your device. The steps to do so depend on your Android version:
    • On Android 2.3 and below, go to Settings > Applications > Development and tick the USB Debugging Checkbox.
    • On Android 4.0 and 4.1, go to Settings > Developer Options and find the option to enable USB Debugging there.
    • On Android 4.2 (and probably above it too), go to Settings > About Phone > Build Number. Tap the build number seven times to unveil the Developer Options. Then go to Settings > Developer Options and enable USB Debugging from that menu.
  • If you haven't already, root your phone. For a start, look for the rooting guide of your phone on Google by googling Root Your_Device_Name.
  • There are two (and possibly more) ways of doing it:
    • Using Move2sd enabler:

      • Download move2sd enabler app from the Play Store.
      • Open the application and tap the I've read it button and then the Next button. In the next screen, select whatever location you want the apps to be installed to by default and select apply.
      • Go to Manage Applications as you normally do and move Google Play Services or Google Maps or any other application you want (except system apps and Play Store)
    • Using Titanium Backup:

      • Download Titanium Backup from the play store.
      • Find the app you want to move to sd card in the Backup/Restore tab of the app
      • Long press on Google Play Services or Google Maps or any app of your choice and select Move app to sd card from the list
      • You can move even Play Store to sd card using this method
We hope you are enjoying the extra space you just gained on your phone. Do ask any questions you have in the comments section.

Micromax A90S gets Jelly Bean update with ZhaoBlastJB Custom ROM

$

Micromax A90S has received an unofficial Jelly Bean update just like its younger brother Canvas 2 did. We shall get to how to install Jelly Bean 4.1 on your Micromax A90S superfone Pixel in a short while.

So, how did the update come? As we all know, Micromax doesn't releases its kernel source, so that's make compiling newer versions an impossible thing. Just like Mobistel Cynus T2's JB update came as blessing in disguise, it's the A90S's rebranded brother Blu Vivo 4.3 which has received a Jelly Bean upgrade, thanks to which developers have been able to port Jelly Bean over to Micromax A90S. And the good thing is that there aren't any bugs at all. So you can enjoy all the hardware of your phone in full glory.

Features of the ROM:

  • Deodexed and zipaligned apps
  • Based on Android 4.1
  • LCD Density has been set to 250
  • Solved GPS Bug, lock time decreased
  • And a few mods from Sony phones

Before you proceed ahead:

  • Learn more about rooting and its benefits.
  • Make sure that youhave charged your phone.
  • Be warned that rooting voids your manufacturer warranty.
  • Enable USB Debugging first. If you have a device that runs on Gingerbread (Android 2.3 or below), go to Settings > Applications > Development. Instead, if you own a device running Android 4.0 or 4.1, go to Settings and then to Developer options.

How to install Jelly Bean Custom ROM on Micromax A90S:

  • First of all, you need to root your Micromax A90S and install clockworkmod recovery on it. Obviously, skip this step if you have already done that.
  • You will have to flash Blu Vivo's  JB firmware on your A90S otherwise it won't boot when you flash the ZhaoBlastJB rom on it. There is a good pictorial guide to help you do that here. This is the more difficult part of this guide. It is smooth sailing ahead.
  • Download the ZhaoBlastJB ROM and transfer it to your device's sd card.
  • Reboot into clockworkmod recovery on your mobile. Not sure how to do this? Switch off your phone and press and hold the key combination for your device. Generally, it is something like Volume Up + Power or Volume Down + Power button.
  • When you get to cwm recovery, use volume keys to scroll up and down and power key to select. Using the mentioned keys, select the Install zip from sd card option.
  • Browse to the location where you pasted the rom in step 3 and select it.
  • When the recovery is done with flashing the new rom on your device, reboot your phone and enjoy the Jelly Bean sweetness on your phone.
Head over to Bhardik's thread on xda if you want to suggest any change in the rom. Comment below if you weren't able to flash this rom. Share it with your friends to multiply the fun!

Micromax A110Q Canvas 2 Plus,an enhanced version of Canvas 2, up for grab at INR 12,100

$

Micromax A110Q has been spotted on the Micromax Store and can be ordered right now. The delivery time is mentioned to be 7-8 days.

With the Canvas 2 Plus, Micromax looks keen to cash on the popularity of the original Canvas 2 smartphone. It might have taken a cue from Samsung which has launched various models named after their flagship devices, and the success of Galaxy S III Mini indicates that Micromax might be able to strike a deal, given Micromax decides to promote the device.

Talking about the device, Canvas 2 Plus is a Quad Core version of Canvas 2, as the model number A110Q might have suggested to you. Apart from processor, the only noticeable difference is in the RAM section, which has been upgraded to 1 GB. This will allow for better multitasking than its predecessor.

Here are the detailed specifications of the Micromax A110Q Canvas 2 Plus:
  • 5 inch IPS Display with WVGA (480x854) resolution
  • 196 pixels per inch density
  • 1.2 GHz Quad Core Processor with Mediatek 6589 chipset (same as in Micromax A116 Canvas HD)
  • Latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (No words about any Jelly Bean/Key Lime Pie Update in the future)
  • 2000 mAh battery (same as in Canvas 2)
  • 1 Gigabyte of RAM
  • 4 GB internal storage with about 1.5 GB of space for installation of apps (i.e.e /data partition of the phone)
  • Connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G connectivity (probably in first sim only)
  • 8 MegaPixel back camera with Auto Focus and LED flash
  • 2 MP front camera for video calling and any other use you can make of it
As you can observe from the specsheet above, except the processor, RAM and software version, there is hardly anything that has changed. But those three specs are the most crucial for a phone’s performance. Let’s hope the phone is as fluid and smooth as its flagship brother Canvas HD. Leave your feedback about the features of the phone and the phone itself the Disqus Comments plugin below this post.
In case you want to buy this device, you can do so on Micromax Store. It isn’t available on any other online retailer as of yet.

Amazon’s app store now supports 195 countries including India; Give it a try Now!

Just now, Amazon has added support for about 195 countries with the latest App store v5 release. Till now, App Store had been exclusive to US, Canada and 5 other countries.

For a quick comparison, Apple supports 155 countries while Google supports 134 countries. Blackberry and WP8 fare somewhat better than Play Store and iOS app store with 171 and 180 countries respectively. So, that means of all major app markets out there, Amazon app store will now enjoy the largest maximum possible user base (because it can’t overtake Play Store and App Store in terms of user base, at least right now). All these countries, which include Australia, Brazil, Mexico and our beloved India, will get a true authentic source other than Play Store. Add to that the fact that Amazon App Store bring a paid app for free daily under the “Free App of the day” scheme.

The changelog of v5 of the app store includes:
  • International support for Canada customers
  • Added support for nearly 195 countries
  • Performance enhancements
  • Other bug fixes and stability enhancements
What this brings on the table for you:
If, unfortunately, Google Play Store doesn’t allow you to buy paid apps in your country, you can now legally buy any paid app you want (as long as they are available in the Play Store). If you are an app developer, it brings you the opportunity to showcase your app to the whole world, literally. And most people (including me) seem to love the “Free app of the Day” scheme too! Though it was possible to use App store in unsupported countries earlier too, with the help of VPNs and other tricks, but it would be less pain for everyone who used those tricks.
Let’s get to the part you are awaiting for, the installation part.
The installation is as simple as it gets. You must have enabled Unknown sources option in Settings > Security (if on Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean) or in Settings > Applications (if on Gingerbread or below). This option is required to enable installation of apps that are downloaded from outside of play store.
When you are done with the previous step, go to http://www.amazon.com/getappstore and download the apk of the App Store from there. When the download completes, tap on the file to install it on your phone. In case a pop up appears asking you whether you want to use Package Installer orverify and Install to open the file with, you are free to choose any of them, both would install it equally good.

Shoppingwish, the price comparison portal, gets angel investment from Silicon Valley

$

Though we generally don’t cover startup news, the startup involved here may be of interest to many of our readers. Shoppingwish.in, a shopping tool for a huge variety of products in the Indian market, has lured the interest (along with funds) of Sandeep Johri and 4 other angel investors from Silicon Valley. The amount of investment obtained by the portal couldn’t be obtained but it will surely help its founders, Sushil Choudhari and Madhuri Khandelwal, to take Shoppingwish to new heights.

Shoppingwish was bound to garner some attention thanks to Khandelwal’s experience of founding TheFind.com, a site similar to Shoppingwish.com in the US. Sushil Chodhari also enjoys entrepreneurial history and had founded Dhingana.com, a social music streaming site. Shoppingwish has lured in a lot of users in the past few months and registered an impressive 50% rate of growth in user base since the past December.

As of now, the startup is working with almost all major e-shopping portals including the likes of Croma, Flipkart, Snapdeal and HomeShop18. Shoppingiwish grabs data from all these shopping sites and adds other useful information like user reviews, coupons and price alerts etc. to each of the 3.5 million+ products listed there. The product catalogue includes electronic gadgets, i.e. the stuff we, at Droidiser, are interested in. Shoppingwish also aims to introduce new segments viz. fashion, lifestyle, baby care and furnishing stuff. Shoppingwish has also promised an app for its users with Android or iOS device in the coming months, we shall keep you updated on that.

Talking about the challenges that startup has to face, it has got some serious competition from already established services like Amazon’s Junglee, Mysmartprice, PriceDekho.com and a few other renowned services aiming to get the attention of the very same user base. Given that the rate of internet penetration in India is ever increasing, the number of people looking for products online will also increase. So, the future looks bright for Shoppingwish if it is able to get over its competition.

[Deal Alert] Buy Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One for the cheapest price in India

$

Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One are two of the best devices money can buy you, at the present time. If you have been hunting down the web for the cheapest price of HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 online, then your search ends here.

We know you aren't here expecting a comparison of both the devices, but still in a nut shell, if you want performance over looks, Galaxy S4 is the phone to opt for. Instead, if you want a phone with awe-inspiring looks and with a great (but still less than S4's) performance, you better get yourself a HTC One. Another deciding factor here can be your specific taste for Touchwiz or Sense, the User Interface  featured by Galaxy S4 and HTC One respectively (My vote goes out to Sense).

Buy Samsung Galaxy S4 at the cheapest price online:

The phone which launched for INR 41,500 just about a month back can be all yours with a nice discopunt of INR 4,051. S4 can be bought for INR 37,449 on tradus.com by using the coupon code MOBI10. Tradus is a reputable e-retailer and belongs to Ibibo, just in case you wanted to sure whether your money would be going in the right hands. Along with the INR 4k discount you are getting, you will also receive 374 xtrabucks, a currency used by tradus, which can be redeemed for real money the next time you purchase something from Tradus. Once you apply the coupon, the option to pay Cash on Delivery is unfortunately not available. As per Tradus, the S4 will reach you within 3-5 days of placing the order.

If you happen to be in the NCR, you are at even better luck. You can get the White Frost model of the Samsung Galaxy S4 for INR 36,250 from ebay. The original selling price listed on ebay is INR 37k but a 750 off coupon (when you use HDFC or ICICI bank for payments) will make the S4 yours for just INR 36,250! That's cheaper than the price of the Galaxy  Note II a year ago! It's a shame that the seller is shipping only to NCR.

Buy HTC One at the lowest price online:

Going head to head with Samsung, HTC One was originally priced at INR 42,000. The HTC One's current best bargain available online is INR 37,900. This deal is available on Indiatimes and the discount can be availed by using the coupon code FLASH2305. I don't think I need to introduce Indiatimes shopping to any of our readers, do I? Looking at the coupon code FLASH2305, I guess it will last for 5 days, that is, till 28th May. So, hurry up if you really need one.

Both these coupons were working at the time of writing. I shall try and keep this post updated with the best offers for both these phones. Comment below if you want to convey any message or share this story with your friends who might be looking out to buy one of these phones. Do let me know if you know of any better offer, preferably online.

Micromax A110 Canvas 2 gets a glimpse of Cyanogenmod 10.1; might get fully working Android 4.2.2 soon

The development on Micromax A110 just doesn't seem to hit a dead end. Even after 9 months of its launch, the device enjoys a pretty strong xda community. Varun Chitre, the guy who earlier built the Thunderzap kernel for this device, has set out on a new ambitious mission: to port Cyanogenmod 10.1 to the Mediatek MT6577 based Micromax A110 It is to be noted that CM 10.1 is the latest version of Cyanogenmod and is based on Android 4.2.2

Before you start getting too excited, even ready to flash it right now, let me share that the rom is currently in pre-alpha stages. At the time of writing, the rom is not even booting. The developer, devoid of the device himself, is working with several xda users who own the device to get the logcats and stuff in order to make the rom work. If you can handle soft bricks on your Canvas 2 and have a decent internet connection, proceed to the xda thread to help out Varun on his mission.

If you want to give it a try, you need to install ICS rom on your Canvas 2 first, and then flash Cyanogenmod 10.1 zip file using the same method. We, at Droidiser, wish Varun and those helping him out, the best of luck for getting a working Cyanognemod 10.1

Do you own a Canvas 2? If yes, don't you want to rock the latest Android version on it? Do share your opinions in the comments.

Interesting Facts and Statistics About iPhones and iPhone Owners

You only need to have eyes to know that Apple's iPhone has been a popular and highly coveted device since its original launch. However, there are some pretty interesting and surprising facts that show just what a powerful force this smart phone has been in the tech market.

Here are some interesting facts and statistics about iPhones, their sales and the people who use them:

Facts About iPhone Sales:

iPhone sales tend to rise year on year, with spikes in quarters when a new model is released as you might expect. The popularity of iPhones varies quite dramatically around the world, and not just between first world and developing countries. Here are some recent statistics relating to iPhone sales:

  • Despite the fact that when they were first launched you couldn't even get them on prepaid contracts, and the fact that they are the most expensive handsets to buy with most prepaid deals, iPhones now account for 8% of all pay as you go phones sold.
  • iPhones accounted for 29% of all the smartphones sold in the UK in the first quarter of this year.
  • In the US, this was 44%, showing just how much more popular Apple devices are in America than in Britain.
  • Worldwide, 17% of all smartphone sales in the same period were iPhones. Rivals Samsung were actually the leaders in Q1 of 2013 with 33%.
  • In total, Apple sold 37.4 million new iPhone handsets in the first three months of 2013. During the same period in 2012, they sold 35.1 million.

Statistical Projections:

Based on sales trends and market research, industry statisticians believe the following are likely projections regarding the future of the iPhone:

  • 40% of teenagers plan to buy iPhones within the next six months.
  • 27% of the population of America will own an iPhone at the start of 2014 (it is currently 20%).
  • By 2017, this will have risen to a massive 42%.
  • 91% of current iPhone users will buy an Apple phone as their next device (compared with 76% of android phone owners).

Apps and iTunes Transactions:

iPhone owners are able to spend money on all kinds of apps and media with their iPhones. Here are some interesting statistics:

  • Worldwide, around one American dollar per day is spent on apps, in app purchases (such as extra content in games) and music or video from iTunes for every Apple device in use.
  • 49.9 billion apps were downloaded in the first quarter of 2013 alone.
  • 86% of iPhone users play games on their phones, compared with 76% of android owners.

Protecting the iPhone:

There are plenty of options for insuring an iPhone in the UK, including things like Protect Your Bubble Gadget Insurance, coverage on home insurance and policies bought from your mobile phone service provider. Around 13% of UK smart phone owners have a policy taken out specifically on their smart phone (rather than coverage included with home insurance or other policies). By comparison, only 12% have income protection. This could mean that on the whole, we value our phones more than our jobs!
Laura Ginn is a technology blogger, who despite having plenty of opportunities to play with and review its rivals, can't live without her iPhone! As a fan of Apple products, she keeps a close eye on how they affect the UK tech industry.

Micromax A110 has been the most popular phone on our blog, and has been one of the driving forces behind the visitors we serve daily. In this post, we shall help out those readers by listing down the best custom roms they should give a try on their Micromax A110 Canvas 2.

A ROM stands for read only memory and the ROMs we generally talk about an Android partition gets written to that partition. These ROMs decide the User Interface and the performance of your device along with a few other things like the custom kernel. The urge to flash custom roms often leads people to root their phone. And we expect that you have already rooted your Micromax A110 Canvas 2 and have installed clockworkmod recovery installed on it. Clockworkmod recovery (or TWRP recovery) is a must for flashing custom roms or any other third party zip.

Before you proceed:
  • If you are on Ice Cream Sandwich, follow Rooting Micromax A110 on ICS and then flash clockworkmod recovery.

  • I have linked the xda thread of all the roms in their description. Visit that thread to learn about the latest updates and to download the latest rom version.
  • The general method of flashing a custom rom on Micromax A110 is:
    • Download the latest version of the rom you chose to try from the specified xda thread.
    • Transfer the ROM's zip file to your Canvas 2's sd card.
    • Power off your Micromax A110. When it vibrates, the phone has shut down completely.

    • Go to Install zip from sd card, then to Choose zip from sd card and finally select the rom file you transferred to your sd card in step 2.
    • Go to Advanced and select Wipe Batter stats.
    • Reboot your device.
  •  Please note that these roms have been chosen on the basis of feedback they have received.

The 5 Custom ROMs to try on Micromax A110 Canvas 2 before you (or the phone) die:

  1. Lewa OS ROM
  2. JMP ROM
  3. Suvi ROM
  4. Raven OS ROM
  5. Stock ROM
Now, we shall talk about these rom in details.
  • Lewa OS ROM:

Lewa OS is a fork of Android OS with heavy changes in the User Interface. Fortunately, the User Interface changes for the better. If you were starting to get bored of the same Android UI on your device, don't waste a second and try this rom on your Canvas 2 now!

This rom was ported to Canvas 2 by Mufti.arfan and has a dedicated thread over here.

    Screenshots:

Download: Lewa OS v13.05.24 (About 202 Megabytes)

    Known Bugs:
    • Doesn't work well with Crossbreeder. You don't need to care about this if you don't know what it is.
    • Using OTG requires you to use OTG Mount Helper app.

  • JMP ROM:

JMP ROM was one of the very first roms released for Micromax A110 Canvas 2 and enjoys a good feedback from its users. I am sure you too won't regret downloading it.

This rom has been developed by Jiggar M. Pattani and has its thread here.

    Screenshots:

    Download:
JMP ROM v11.5 (About 113 Megabytes)

Known Bugs: All of the known bugs can be fixed by atches present here. Apply the one according to the bug you face.

  • Suvi ROM:

Suvi ROM has been developed by bsuhas, and just like JMP rom, enjoys mostly positive feedback from its users. It is definitely worth a shot. The official xda thread for this rom is here.

    Screenshots:
    Download:
Download link for the latest version of the rom have been removed for unknown reasons. Go to the thread to check if it is back ( and if it is comment on this post to let me know).

    Known Bugs:
    None

  • Raven ROM:

As Akshit Patel, the rom developer, puts it, this rom features a dark theme in most of its applications and  provides UI that is never seen before. To see if all that is true, you will have to try it out. The xda support thread for this rom can be found here.

    Screenshots:

    Download:
Raven ROM v2 (About 222 Megabytes)

Known Bugs: Clicking Battery option in Settings leads to a Force Close. Also, the network signal stays even when it is not working.

  • Stock Jelly Bean ROM:
Wasn't it  a list of custom roms for Micromax A110? Yes, it was, but according to me Stock ROM is the most stable rom for any phone and given that no rom for Canvas 2 has been built from source and are just aggregation of tweaks, you can try all those tweaks on your stock ROM itself. If you want to revert to the stock jelly bean rom for Micromax A110, head here. As expected, it is totally bugless.
This is it. Whew, it took me a lot of time to gauge user's response for the bucketloads of roms available of Micromax A110 and to select the best few. If you feel any other rom deserves a place here, comment below. At this time, a poll is also running about the same topic. It is on the right sidebar, do participate there.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD A116 gets official Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean Update

$

After over 3 months of its launch, Micromax has finally released the Jelly Bean 4.2.1 update for its flagship device: Micromax A116 Canvas HD. Most of the competitors of the Canvas HD already came running with the latest version of the Android OS and it was a matter of time before Micromax pushed Android 4.2 to the phone to diminish the edge the competition was enjoying.

Unfortunately, just like the update of Micromax A110 Canvas 2, Canvas HD owners will have to take their phone to their nearest service centers for the update. An advanced method to install the update from the comfort of one’s couch is expected to be available soon, but would require the phone to be rooted. So, if you aren’t comfortable with rooting and other advanced stuff, go to your nearest service center now and ask them to update the device for you.
The update includes OTA support for any future updates. So, if the Canvas HD ever receives the next Android update (which may be 4.x or even 5.x), you will probably be able to download the update from the phone itself, as is the case with the updates provided by major device manufacturers.

The changelog:
  • Based on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean
  • GPS fix locks position much faster (don’t know why almost every Micromax phone needs a fix for this, can’t they fix it in stock?)
  • Semi transparent notification bar
  • Panorama mode added to the Camera
If you had been an advanced user, you might have already tried out the Android 4.2 based custom rom by kumar abhishek. Also, if you want to unroot your device so as to restore your warranty before you take it to the service center for the update, watch this video.

If you can’t go to a Micromax service center for any reason, stay tuned to our blog for any update method for your phone. Also, once you update your device, your root access will also be gone and you would have to root your phone again, keep an eye on our blog for rooting the Android 4.2.1 updated Canvas HD too. Mmxcaster originally broke this news here.

How to update Micromax A116 Canvas HD to Jelly Bean 4.2 using SP Flash Tool

$

Though Micromax A116 Canvas HD  has received the Official Jelly Bean update, as per some readers, some service centers aren't rolling it out right now. If you are an amalgamation of impatience and geekiness, then this guide will let you update your Micromax A116 Canvas HD to Jelly Bean 4.2.1

Please note that if you have already rooted and flashed clockworkmod recovery on your Canvas HD, follow this article instead. If the below guide doesn't work out for you for some reason, or if you just don't want to use SP Flash tool use the clockworkmod recovery method instead. I always find it easier to update an android phone.

Before you Proceed:

  • Flashing it will void your manufacturer warranty even though it is an official release. Why? Because flashing thing on your own voids their terms of service.
  • Charge your phone to decent battery levels before starting with the guide.
  • This guide will work on all Windows versions as long as you are able to install drivers for your phone successfully. (For drivers, use pdanet or this method)

Update Micromax A116 Canvas HD to Jelly Bean 4.2.1 using SP Flash Tools:

  1. Download the official JB 4.2.1 ROM for Micromax Canvas HD here. It is hosted by Moulnisky, which obviously isn't the official source to get the rom from, but as Micromax has changed the password of their FTP, we have no other option.
  2. Extract the S9201_4.2_MP_F3F8_B1_IN_MMX_09_FLASHER_USER.rar file you downloaded above anywhere as per your convenience.
  3. Download and extract SP Flash Tool.
  4. Run the Flash Tool.exe file from the SP Flash Tool folder you extracted.
  5. Click on Scatter Loading button and locate the scatter file present in the rom folder you extracted in step 2. (The scatter loading file ends with the .txt extension and is named something like MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt)
  6. Pull out the battery from your Canvas HD. Also, eject your SIM(s) and SD card from the mobile.
  7. In the Flash Tool window, press the Download button. Then, connect your phone (still without battery and everything) using USB cable.
  8. The flashing process would begin. When it completes, reboot your phone. As expected, the first boot will take some time. *Don't* touch the screen during the first boot. Tpupgrade will upgrade your phone during the first boot and touching the screen will cause it to miscalibrate. Don't even press the OK button on your screen. Reboot your phone when a message says "Upgrade was successful" appears on your phone.
  9. Switch off your phone and insert your SIM and SD card. Now, explore the sweetness of the latest Jelly Bean version on your Micromax A116 Canvas HD.
This update adds the option to save your games data to the external sd card, which means that you won't have to swap your internal and external storage in order to enjoy games with large sd data.

After you update your phone to official Jelly Bean 4.2, you will lose root access. To regain that, follow this guide (which I expect, should work on the updated phone equally well).

We hope that the upgrading process went smooth for you. For any troubleshooting/help, shoot a comment below using the disqus plugin we have installed on our blog.

I posted a method to update your Micromax A116 Canvas HD using SP Flash Tools just a few minutes back. but if you have a rooted A116 with clockworkmod recovery installed on it, I bet you will find this one easier. What's interesting is the fact that if everything goes as expected, you won't even need a pc for updating your Canvas HD to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Pre-requisites:

Update Micromax A116 Canvas HD to Android 4.2 using Clockworkmod Recovery:

  1. Download the clockworkmod recovery flashable zip of the Android 4.2 official rom here. Please be cautioned that this rom has been tweaked a bit and isn't exactly stock, but is not a custom rom either.
  2. Switch off your Canvas HD. Press Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously till you boot into recovery mode.
  3. Using Volume Up and Down keys to scroll through the list of options available in the recovery, get to the Backup and Restore option and select Backup. This will create a backup of your current rom, which can be restored in case anything goes wrong.
  4. Once the backup is completed, select Wipe Data/Factory Reset. Then, go to Advanced and select Wipe Dalvik Cache.
  5. Go to Install zip from sdcard and locate the rom file.
  6. Confirm your action and let the flashing process complete.
  7. Go to Advacned and select Wipe Battery stats and then Fix permissions.
  8. Reboot your phone. During the first boot, let TPupgrade do its thing and *don't* touch the screen (even to press the OK button that pops up on your screen). After 5 minutes or when a message saying Upgrade was successful appears on your phone, power off your phone.
  9. Perform a final reboot and you are done.
Tip: If you are using TWRP recovery, select the appropriate options and you will be able to update your phone without any problem.

Download Micromax A116 Canvas HD stock Wallpapers

All things aside, the wallpapers that come stock with Micromax A116 Canvas HD, and other Canvas series smartphones from Micromax, look fabulous with all the vivid colors and crispness.I tried all the wallpapers on my 8 inch Karbonn Velox tablet, and although the aspect ratio of the wallpapers didn't match that of the tablet's, they still made my tablet more awesome.

I managed to pull out all the default wallpapers that Micromax provides with A116 Canvas HD. I was in a dilemma though, whether I should zip all of them together or provide them separately. I went for the latter option so as to facilitate those who have a painfully slow internet connection (like me) or are stuck on a limited internet plan and don't want to waste their bandwidth. You can download the wallpapers you like individually.
For those of you, who are interested to know how I managed to extract the wallpapers from the Canvas HD, stay tuned for a neat little guide to help you do that easily. And that guide won't be exclusive to Canvas HD only, rather it will work on almost all Android devices out there. Do share your views about these wallpapers in the comments section and report any dead links too. Also, if you find that these wallpapers are cool, do share them with your friends.

Use Titanium Backup to ease the process of switching between different ROMs

Titanium Backup is the most popular app when i it comes to backup utilities on an Android app, and it has got this feat under its name for some solid reasons. Apart from taking backups of your applications along with their data, it offers a serious number of other small nifty features, one of which eases the process of switching roms thousand times more easier. An option to zip all the apps on your phone means that you can get all your applications from the rom you are currently using to the rom you are going to install without any hassles.

I remember the bad old days when I had to keep a list of all my apps when I used to switch roms. Later, I used to restore them one by one using titanium backup. I know there must be done workaround to this problem earlier too, but this was surely a welcome feature in the recent updates of the application. Laziness comes at a cost though and this feature, thus, comes only in the paid version of the Titanium Backup app.

To use this feature, go to edit filters and select user apps, then press the tick mark icon. When ask the user apps are listed, tap Menu button and select batch Actions. From the list of options, select the "Create update.zip from Apps+ Data", then untick any app you don't want to have in the update.zip file and continue. Go to your recovery and flash the update.zip normally, whenever you want to restore all your apps.

Although, this could be achieved by going to Advanced Restore in clockworkmod recovery and restoring the data partition only but that would also restore all accounts information among other things, plus it's lot more easier to handle a zip file than an img file, right?

If you are still stuck with the free version of the app or are a villain and have the pirated version of the paid app, now is the time to reward the developers for their hard work by buying the Titanium Backup Pro key from the Play Store. Share this tip with your friends to ease their geeky lives.

How to get unlimited lives in Candy Crush Saga on Android and iOS

No one has been able to decode the reason behind the success of Candy Crush Saga. There have been games with similar gameplay since ages and I can hardly recall any game (except Bejeweled) that achieved this much attention from fans. We guess it might be the sweetness of the protagonists in this game (i.e. the multicolored candies) or the urge to beat your friends' high score. As we are not here to discuss that but to take your addiction to new highs, we shall directly get to the topic of your interest. We know how much it sucks to stare at the countdown when you are out of lives. Or to beg to your friends to 'donate' a life to you so that you can continue your expedition. In this article, we shall explain to you how you can get unlimited lives easily, without having to wait for hours.

The game uses the inbuilt system clock to restore your lives. So, if you want limitless lives:

  • Start Candy Crush Saga.
  • No matter whether you are on an Android device or an iPad/iPhone, go to Settings and then proceed to Date and Time (or whatever it's called on iOS).
  • If automatic detection/update of Time has been turned on, turn it off so that you can alter the time.
  • Change the date to match that of tomorrow, or you can even change the current year itself.
  • Switch back to your game and confirm whether all your lives have been restored and set your time/date back to the real one.

The above trick can also be used to skip the one day wait between two quests. If you find yourself too lazy to change your time every now and then, an Android app called GMD Speed Time automates this thing. Just install the app, select how many times faster you want time to pass, go to your game and enjoy! When you are done, stop the insane flow of time by tapping on the GMD Speed Time notification in the status bar and clicking stop. Stopping the app will correct your clock. There's a small hindrance for some of you though, your phone must be rooted to use that app. If you are not having a rooted device, the manual method is always there, though you might want to know some other perks of rooting.

Enjoy playing this sweet and social game more than ever! Share this story with those of your friends who keep on asking you for a life.

8 Ways To Make Your Smart Phone Work For You

Take advantage of your smart phone's technology. Make your life much more convenient with these great technologies that sync up with your phone!

Upgrade the lighting in your home

The Phillips Hue is a light bulb that allows you to control it wirelessly through any smart device. This bulb covers nearly all the colors on the visible spectrum. You can choose the color of your lights from photos that you've taken or from any photo of your choice. You can change the brightness of the lights and set timers to them also. These lights do everything. Best of all, you won't have to replace your lamps and light switches. The light bulbs cover it all.

Coffeemaker

I know it sounds a little silly, but this is more convenient than you think. Scanomat has a fully programmable coffeemaker that can be scheduled to brew your favorite cup of coffee in the morning. Additionally, if you decide that you want another type of coffee, you can change it on the fly using your smart device. Being able to stay in bed and make coffee at the same time is convenient and quite luxurious.

Turn your car on

That's right. You can use your phone or smart device to do even this. There are several apps that will sync up your car to your phone, allowing remote access to your vehicle. During the hot summers, you won't have to step into a muggy car anymore. Just start your car and let the AC cool your car off before you hop in. For the Winter months, enjoy a warm safe-haven from the harsh cold.

Pet feeder

Sometimes, we don't make it home on time to feed our lovely animals because of a busy workday. Luckily, there are pet feeders out on the market that can be controlled wirelessly. If you're ever running late, you won't have to worry about your pet going on a hunger rampage around your home ever again.

Smart thermostats

These nifty little devices are programmable thermostats that can be controlled via your smart phone. This means you can control your homes temperature from anywhere. This will help you cut back on energy costs and keep your home at the right temperature. Additionally, after manually changing the temperature in your home after a few days, some smart thermostats can actually learn your schedule and take care of the change for you.

Security cameras

There are many types of different security cameras on the market, however, the most impressive ones are motion-sensitive cameras that can be remotely accessed from anywhere in the world. You'll be able to watch live feeds of what's going on at home to make sure everything is safe and sound.

Security system

A comprehensive home security system can actually help you achieve everything listed in this article. My League home security and Baytown home security allow me remote access to every electronic device in my home. On top of that, I can remotely lock and unlock my doors and do so much more. Solid security systems like this one aren't as expensive as they sound and can provide you with mass amounts of home automation.

Make your Google Account more secure with 2 step verification

$

Like mine, if your Google Account too stores a lot of sensitive information about you and you don’t want that to end up in anyone else’s hand, turning on 2 step verification on your Google Account is a wise move. Thanks to the added hassle of this double security, your account will still be secure if any hacker ends up cracking the password of your Google Account. When you enable this security measure on your account, you shall be given access to your account only when you confirm a code sent to your phone in addition to the password you generally use to login to your device. Unless someone gains access to both – your cell phone as well as your Google password, your account remains safe.

So, if you are willing to make your account extra secure, follow the short introductory guide I am including in this article.
  • First off, enable 2 Step Verification by going to https://accounts.google.com/security
  • In the process, you will be required to add a Mobile Number to your Google Account, to which your confirmation SMS will be sent. Google might also ask for a backup number, just in case.
  • As SMS (or voice call, the alternative to SMS) might take some time to deliver depending on the carrier you are using, your location and a few others, you can install the Google Authenticator app on your phone if it happens to be an Android, iOS or Blackberry device. With that app, you get time-dependent codes which change every minute and you can use them even when you are on airplane mode. Set this up if you are privileged enough to have a smartphone based on the aforementioned OS.
  • Download some backup codes for the times when you don't have access to your cell phone, and write them down on a piece of paper and keep them in your wallet.
  • When signing in to your Google Account using the security code, you can mark the devices you trust so that you don't have to reverify them every time you login from that pc.
  • You can use the trusted devices to access your account without any code verification.

Some words about the Application-Specific Passwords (ASPs):

Application specific passwords are to be used when you need to log in to your Google Account via a third party app i.e. those apps which won't ask for the security code specifically, like, K9 mail on your Android device or a Messenger on your iPhone. These can be generated by visiting settings of your 2 step verification set up here. These passwords will work only once and have to be entered in the password field in place of your regular password.

Adding a Google Account with “2-step verification enabled” on Android:

When I activated the 2 step verification on my Google account, my Android phone and tablet threw me an instant notification that signing in to the Google Account has failed. If you have to add your Google Account which has 2 Step verification turned on on an Android 4.0+ device, then simply enter your password and then you will be required to enter the verification code that you receive either by SMS or using the Google Authenticator app on your smartphone. On Android 2.3 and below, you will have to use an ASP (Application Specific Password) in the password field to get it to work. Took me a few minutes to sort that out. It is to be noted that most Google apps on your Android smartphone don’t require you to enter ASP as they are authenticated by the Google account that you are using on your Android device.

For any queries regarding 2 Step verification, drop a comment below this article and I shall try to respond to it.

Motorola begins teasing the Moto X -officially

$

The only news Motorola has made in the past few months relate to the rumors about the upcoming Moto X. The first phone being manufactured by Motorola in close partnership with its parent company Google is being eagerly awaited by many Android enthusiasts who are looking to reward themselves with a new smartphone this season. Motorola couldn't have found a better date than 4th July, USA's Independence Day, to start promoting its made in USA phone. The first print ad for the Moto X ran on NYT, WSJ and Washington Post on 3rd July i.e. today.

The "Designed By You. Assembled in USA" tagline confirms two rumors:

  1. There will be some sort of customizability option available to the end user. It might allow the user to choose from a plethora of colors or to choose how much RAM they want in their phone, but no official words are out about what the users will actually get to customize. We are sure there will be lots of permutations and combinations that will be kept in mind in order to make mass production of those customized handsets possible.
  2. The phone's manufacturing and assembling process will take place in USA itself. It will be the first phone in history to be manufactured, designed, engineered and assembled at a mass scale in USA itself.
According to a leak, this might be what the Moto X might look like
Another rumor that has been doing the rounds suggest that Motorola will be pricing this phone very competitively, probable in the same price bracket as LG Nexus 4. We wonder whether any of that pricing strategies would benefit us Indians as Nexus 4, which was priced at USD 350 in the Play Store reached India with an upped price tag of INR 27,000 (about USD 490, as 1 USD was about INR 55 at the time of the launch of the handset).

Still, if you have been holding your next smartphone purchase waiting for the release of the Moto X, it would be wise to wait a bit more. What are your views about the upcoming with Google device.

If this comes out to be true, Micromax Canvas 4 won't be as high-end as you were expecting

$

Canvas 4 has rode high on the rumors side, with some going to the extent that the phone will feature an octo-core processor. Come July 8 and all the suspense will be unveiled but by what we are seeing on the internet so far, the picture doesn't look that exciting.

Here are the very few things about Canvas 4 that have been officially confirmed by the Micromax Mobiles fan page:

  • A few images posted on the fan page confirms how the Canvas 4 will appear
  • A new unlock method will be introduced in the phone which will either be Voice Unlock (which has already been available in the Android 4.2 update of Canvas HD) or a blow of air (as suggested here)
That isn't much, right? But the first point leads us to several other details about the phone, if our eyes aren't getting fooled by the looks. A friend of mine spotted the pics of Wiko Stairway, an upcoming phone from a French brand and they look strikingly similar to the pics posted by Micromax on their Facebook page. The only difference we could spot in the pics was the fist shaped Micromax logo was absent from the Wiko model. But the looks didn't disappoint me, but the specs did -a lot.

Here are the specs of the Wiko Stairway:

  • 5 inch HD IPS Display (The site doesn't mention full HD, so it might be just 720p)
  • 13 MP Camera at the back and a 5 MP shooter at the front
  • Gorilla Glass protection
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 1.2 GHz Quad-core Cortex A7 processor
  • 16 GB Internal storage
  • 2000 mAh Battery
  • Measures at 144.5 x 73 x 9 mm and weighs 164 g
There are quite a few things we liked in the specsheet like the camera, internal storage, display and the fact that the phone is having an aluminium design giving it a premium look. Everything else is disappointing, especially the processor and ram. When everyone was hoping for at least 1.5 Ghz Quad-core and 2 gigs of RAM, the above specs will disappoint many Micromax fans.

We hope that only the looks of the two phones are same and that the Canvas 4 comes out to be much more stronger on the processing side. But we can only hope. If you are thinking about pre-booking the Micromax Canvas 4, we would advise you to put your INR 5k in a bank and enjoy the extra interest you will get in the one month or so that Micromax will take to refund your money, if you decide not to buy the phone once the official specs are out. If you are really keen about having the Canvas 4, at least wait for the specs first. I don't know what Micromax had in mind when they started pre-booking without even revealing anything about the phone.

Drop your opinion about the Canvas 4 and Micromax's unconventional promotional strategy for it in the comments section below.
