Karbonn launches S9 Titanium for INR 20k; What does this mean to Micromax Canvas 4

$

0
Karbonn mobiles is easily the second largest Indian manufacturer and Android has propelled it a lot in the smartphone segment. To tackle the upcoming competition from Micromax Canvas 4, Karbonn has announced the S9 Titanium just 3 days before the launch of the Canvas 4. Nothing except the pricing of the phone could manage to shock us.

Karbonn S9 Titanium Specs:

  • 1.2 GHz Quad-Core processor with MT6589 chipset
  • 5.5 inch HD IPS Display (1280x720)
  • 13 MP camera at the back and a 5 MP one at the front
  • 2,600 mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • 16 Gigs of Internal storage & 1 GB RAM
  • Dual SIM and other usual connectivity options
Droidiser's opinion on whether you should go for this one:

The only things that seem to be on the brighter side are the battery ammo and the latest version of Android 4.2. I would have added the camera to the brighter things but we can't decide the quality of a phone's camera judging it on the basis of the numbers of megapixels it carries.

Unfortunately, everything else that we have learnt about this phone failed to impress us. When a user decides to invest this much money on a local brand like Karbonn, he wants his phone to be significantly better than the offerings made by reputed brands. But in this case, Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro at INR 17k seems to be much better deal to me.

What does this mean to the Canvas 4?

The Micromax Canvas 4 enjoys a huge fanbase waiting to get their hands on it as soon as it hits the market. Chances are even if the specs of Canvas 4 are nearly the same as that of the S9 Titanium at a similar price, most would still prefer the former.

But the word to focus on is if. Most of the popularity and fanbase Canvas 4 enjoys is catapulted by the rumors about the phone that speculated 2 GB of RAM and full HD display among other nice batch of things. If the Canvas 4 comes out with a simlar hardware, fans would feel cheated. Though Micromax didn't officially promised any over-the-top specs like the rumors suggested, this is how it works. So, if this if comes out to be true (and our report suggests so), the situation would get interesting for other manufacturers and disturbing for you (if you have already booked a Canvas 4 or plan to do so).

Karbonn has hit a nice shot with the correct timing. Some cheated fans might look for other options and Karbonn has put one on the plate.

Another factor which can hit a nail in the coffin for the Canvas 4 would be its pricing. Looking at some previous records, Karbonn has priced handsets with similar specs to those of Micromax at a comparatively lower price,. This leads me to believe that the Canvas 4 is going to be in the 19-22k price bracket.

How to type in Hindi easily on your PC and Android devices: Exclusive Tip

Trying to set up a Hindi Android forum on our We forums, I found it that it can be a real pain to type in Hindi. There are a few software available on the internet to type on Hindi on a Windows PC, but unless you know how to type in Hindi (like if you have learnt that on a Hindi typewriter, most of us haven't), it is still quite a big problem to type using the Hindi keyboard layout. In this guide, I shall present to you a handy new way to type in Hindi.

All of us need to type in Hindi at one time of point or another, even if it is a small text. Google comes to the rescue here for all of us who are fluent in Hinglish. A lot of us do a lot of chatting and other stuff in Hinglish. This small Google trick allows you to translate that Hindi text in pure Devanagari script which you can copy to your required field.

Using Google to convert Hinglish to Hindi:

  • Go to http://www.google.co.in
  • Below the Google Search bar, click on Hindi link (In the Google.co.in offered in line)
  • When you click on Hindi, the page will reload.
  • Near the right end of the search box, a little keyboard icon will appear, click on it.
  • Three options will pop out of that button, select the first one that says "अ हिंदी"
  • Start typing in Hinglish using your normal keyboard and the text will intelligently get converted to Hindi. See the youtube video below to remove your doubts, if any.

How to enable Hindi layout on default keyboard on Windows 7:

Watch this video to learn how you can use Hindi layout on your physical/deafult onscreen keyboard if you are having Windows 7. If you are on any other versions of Windows, refer this guide by Microsoft.

How to type in Hindi on Android device:

Make sure that your device supports Hindi font. To check this go to any site with Hindi text (like this) from your Android browser or ask your friend having a good ol' Nokia to sms you anything in Hindi.
If your device doesn't have Hindi support, don't get disheartened. As you own an Android device, almost everything is possible. Use this guide to get Hindi support on your device, though it needs to be rooted to perform this tutorial.
To input in Hindi on your Android device, you can use the Google method posted above on a javascript enabled browser or download Google हिंदी इनपुट application from the play store.

We, The Droidiser Community is the new go to place for Android Discussions

Our blog has always been buzzing with loads on comments on many of our posts. To point them in the right directions, here we are presenting you We, a  special place for Android enthusiasts. Read on to know the various features you will enjoy as a We member and what is the idea behind starting this.

About five months ago, we started the Droidiser Forum, a healthy new way to keep that interaction more sorted so that other users get benefitted. The forums were doing well but we had to abandon the project as the site went down a lot of times due to some hosting problems. As I have enough time during my post exam holidays, I decided to start a fresh new project with the same objective in mind: To provide a healthy place for Android discussions especially in the Indian context, we decided to develop We. At the time Droidiser forum was started, it was only Android forum dedicated to India.

Recently, I have seen a surge in the number of android forums out there. To distinguish ours from all those, here are the reasons you should consider signing up for the Cleanest, Friendliest Android Forums right now.

Free account with no bars: I have seen a lot of forums where premium membership plans areavailable which gives an alienated feeling to the users with free membership, no matter how much value they give to the forum. At We, we respect the things you share on the forum instead of the subscription you are opting for. We rank our members on the basis of their level of participation and helpfulness, not whether they have paid money or not. We don't have any plans for introducing paid subscription even in the long term. So, you can stay sure that We will be always free for everyone. In the future, better features such as increased amount of storage for Private Messages, might be provided to members who are highly ranked.

Less Crowded: There are two ways of looking at every thing. There might be a lot of problems associated with having less number of members, but as We has just started, there will be quite low number of people who are active on the forums. Being optimistic, we look at the brightr side of life and in this case that reflects that all the requests users make would have higher chances of getting fulfilled. If you'd request us to create a forum for your device, we shall create one. If you report us a bug or ask us for a feature, we shall do our very best to consider them asap. Also, hooliganism can be better controlled when there isn't much crowd. So, you can expect an absolutely clean atmosphere.

Truly Indian: Looking at some popular Android forums, it is safe to assume that a lots of active members there are Indians. The number is high enough that they can keep a whole forum buzzing. So, though the We forums are open to everyone in the world, it is dedicated to Indians. Live Desi!

Tag other members: This feature was recently introduced on Xda-developers forum and we were really a fan of it. This feature is missing from most forums out there, but considering how handy it is, we have introduced it on We. Use the help topic on the We forum to know how this works. Whenever you tag a fellow member on We, he/she gets a PM or an email (depending on preferences) notifying that the topic might need his/her attention.

No Complicated Rules: We consider We as a family and like all families, We has its ethics and we expect everyone to follow them. Thanks to the almighty, you can actually read these rules without needing to contact a lawyer or setting aside a few hours just for this purpose. An Ethics topic in the General section contains the 9 sacred ethics every member should follow.

Hindi Forums: Most Android forums have a rule (if you have ever read them), that you are supposed to post only and only in English language. That can be a real pain for lot of us who don't feel comfortable in English. The Hindi Forum can be used to discuss anything in Hindi or Hinglish, whatever you feel comfortable using. If you need, this article will help you with typing in Hindi.

Rewards Scheme: First 3 members who get to I'm Droidised! rank will get a Level II reward while first 5 members who reach Android Addict rank will get Level I reward. As I'm no bill Gates and don't have any source of income other than this blog, the rewards won't be life changing but will be a token of respect and love for your fruitful contribution to the forums. And Level II reward will obviously be cooler than the Level I reward! Refer this topic for more info about Ranking system, and this one for the Reward scheme.

Ad Free: The We forums are at the cleanest stage possible right now and currently, there are no plans to bring the annoying ads on this lovely community.
Fine Print: If I am unable to fund the hosting of we, I might be forced to implement them, but right now, they are ad free and will stay in this form for quite a period of time.

Built using Open Source Phpbb: We just love open source stuff, not just because it is free, but for the spirit behind it. That's why We is built using the phpBBforum script.

Register an account at We

Right now, even your first name will be available as username. And that won't last for long. :)

So, if you feel that the reasons above hold a punch and decide to become a member at We, these are some handy topics you might enjoy paying a visit:

  • The Say Hi TopicA new member gets acquainted with other members by posting a Hi and a short introduction of himself.
  • The Ban the Member above you Topic: This is a popular forum game in which the member who is posting bans the member who has posted above him for any silly reason. The banning done in this thread is not real in any context though, it is meant to be a fun place to visit after you brain starts hurting after talking a lot about Android.
  • The Help Topic: If you are facing difficulty using any feature or getting familiar with the options present on the forum, this would be the place We would recommend you to go to.
If you have any suggestions or want to say anything about the We forums, the comments box below is always waiting for you.

Micromax A210 Canvas 4 launched for INR 18k; Lacks the punch in hardware front

$

So, the buzz is finally over. Micromax has officially launched the Canvas 4, unveiling all the specifications and the price point. If you are weak at heart and were expecting too much from this phone, stay away (we warned you earlier too, that this phone might not pack all that you are expecting here and here).
The reason for the high expectancies was obvious: Canvas series has took Micromax to new heights and Micromax, with every new addition to the Canvas series, has made the next iteration considerably better than its predecessor. Take for instance, the differences between Canvas vs Canvas 2 or Canvas 2 and Canvas HD. That’s all about the disappointment people are facing which is imminent from the facebook fan page.

Micromax A210 Canvas 4 Features:

  • Blow air in the mic of the phone to unlock it
  • Vertical panorama mode allows you to shoot pictures of very tall objects (Eiffel Tower?)
  • Floating video player
  • Front camera keeps tracking your eyes and pauses video when you look away. A liftoff from the Galaxy S4.
  • Swipe gestures in Video player to increase brightness and volume (like in MX player)
  • Floating browser that can be pinned to the screen while doing anything else
  • Bringing Canvas 4 close to the ears when a number is on the dialer screen will dial the number (This feature was introduced in the Galaxy Note II and S3)
  • Flip the phone to silence it (known as etiquette mode on some older phones)
  • Flip the phone during  a call to put it on loudspeaker
  • Pre-loaded apps like MusicHub, Hike Messaging, Opera Mini and Opera Mini
  • Anti-theft with M! Power app allows remote wiping and SIM block features

Micromax A210 Canvas 4 Specs:

  • 8.99 mm thin anodized aluminium body
  • 5 inch IPS 720p display with Corning Gorilla Glass and 16.7 million colors
  • 1 Gigabyte RAM
  • 1.2 GHz MT6589 Quad core processor
  • SGX 544 graphics processor
  • 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera
  • Records 1080p videos at 30fps
  • HSPA+ Internet connectivity
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • Dual Sim
  • 16 GB internal storage with up to 32 GB expandable storage
  • 2.4 GB storage available for app installation
  • Available in Pristine White & Smokey Grey colors
  • Light, proximity and G-sensor
  • Free Aluminium Flip cover with surface touch technology worth INR 2,999
  • 2000 mAh battery with upto 8 hrs. of talktime
  • Price: INR 17,999
In a nutshell, the software customizations made by Micromax seem useful (though not innovative), but given what was being expected out of the device, I am not sure how many of the 11 thousand odd people who pre-booked the device would actually buy the phone. See Micromax's presentation of Canvas 4 here (if you have a slow connection) or here (if you're having a fast connection).

We knew it already!

We had stated that the Canvas 4 looks to be a clone of the Wiko Heaven Stairway by the looks of the device in the pics posted by Mmx on Facebook. And that comes out to be true with all the features drastically similar to its French counterpart. About the pricing, in the article about Karbonn S9 Titanium launch, we speculated that given that the Canvas 4 would come out with almost similar specs, we expect it to be in the 17-22k.

Droidiser Recommends: :Should you buy it or not?

Wait for a month of so. With upcoming competition from phones like Sony Xperia C and Xolo Play, Micromax will be forced to drop the price a bit. THis phone would be a good buy at about 15-16k but 18k is a bit too high.

Exclusive: How to get all the features of Micromax Canvas 4 without even buying one!

Many of you might have become a fan of all the goodies Micromax Canvas 4 brings on the software side. Although these features are nice to have on a phone, many of them have been out for a while, either as standalone apps on the play store or as built-in features on some other Android mobiles. If you fancy having them on your current android phone, we are here with this article to help you out on this crusade. Please note that the software features mentioned below are as advertised on the canvas 4 website and we have no idea how they will actually work out.

  • On Micromax A210  Canvas 4:A video player that always stays on the top no matter what app you are running, so that you can watch videos while doing other things on your phone.

    On your Current Android Device:
GPlayer (Super Floating Player) lets you do the exact same thing. This free little app brings in a lot of other customizability options in the pop up that would appear on your screen,. something (I'm sure) the Canvas 4's video player won't possess.
  • On Micromax A210  Canvas 4:
A browser that floats above as a pop up on any app that you run.

    On your Current Android Device:
Floating Browseris a light weight browser that can be used on the top of any other app, thus increasing your productivity in scenarios like when you need to take a note when you are browsing.

Bonus Feature (Not even on Canvas 4):
Tiny Apps Lite is my favorite when it comes to floating apps. It is a bunch of five useful tools (Calculator, Notes, Paint, Music Player and Recorder) inside a single app that can float on your screen all the time. All these share the same Holo inspired UI and look beautiful on the screen. If you are willing to pay, Tiny Apps will include Floating Browser and Floating widgets.
  • On Micromax A210  Canvas 4:
Flip your phone anytime to activate Silence mode. Doing the same action during a call will turn the loudspeaker on.

    On your Current Android Device:
    Flip - Speakerphone
andFlip - Silentare two different apps by the same developer which can help you achieve the Canvas 4 feature stated above.
  • On Micromax A210  Canvas 4:
Swipe gestures in the Video Player will allow you to increase or decrease volume and brightness when a video is playing.

    On your current Android Device:
I don't think I even need to share this one because you have already guessed it, right? It's everyone's favorite MX Player provide these gestures option since the stone age. 50 million+ downloads of this app with a 4.7 average rating tells the story!
  • On Micromax A210  Canvas 4:
M! Anti-theft app allows you to remotely wipe data, block your SIM or track your phone when it gets lost.

    On your current Android Device:
    Avast anti-theft
comes form the family of Avast, which has over 20 years of experience in Computer protection. This app comes with advanced options like locking your phone remotely, activating a siren (which works even when your phone is on silent mode) and track it on a map if it goes missing. If you are rooted, the app gets installed in such a way that the thief won't be able to even uninstall it.
  • On Micromax A210 Canvas 4:
Comes with pre-loaded apps like M! Hub, Hike Messaging and Opera Mini.

    On your current Android Device:
All the apps which are really of some use to the end user can be downloaded for free from the play store.

  • On Micromax A210 Canvas 4:
Take 99 shots in 60 seconds with fast burst mode.

    On your current Android Device:
    Fast Burst Camera Lite
and Burst Mode Camera both these apps let you take up to 30 pictures per second. Putting my extra ordinary math skills to test (ok, I used the calculator :P), that is about 18 times as fast as the one advertised on Canvas 4.

A few features that aren't available as apps:

Vertical Panorama: I don't think it is really that useful. Still, I am sure some app dev would bring this feature to some app pretty soon.
Proximity Dialer: This feature can be handy and saves you a tap at the call button. I couldn't find any such app or mod.
Blow to Unlock: This one is certainly possible as I have seen an app that lets you extinguish a candle by blowing in to the mic. So, it's not specific to hardware at all.
Update: The Blow to Unlock app has been pulled out of the Canvas 4 and works very well on many other Android devices. Read more. Thanks to Hari for informing me about this.
If you were going to spend 18k impressed by these software features only, I hope I saved you some serious money. Do let me know if there is an app available for the three features I coludn't find in any app.

How to unbrick or flash Stock ROM on Micromax A210 Canvas 4/ Blu Life One/ Wiko Stairway (Exclusive)

No matter whether you liked it or not, but thanks to the hype that Micromax generated for Canvas 4, this phone is still going to sell in good numbers. For those of you, who are going to buy this offering from Micromax will appreciate the fact that the Stock ROM of the Micromax A210 Canvas 4 is now available. That means that you can stay sure that nothing will happen to your phone no matter what you do to it (except hammering it literally). This guide will show you how you can install the stock rom on Micromax A210 Canvas 4 or the rebranded versions aka Blu Life One and Wiko Heaven Stairway.

As I stated in the title, flashing the stock rom can bring your bricked phone back to life. Apart from when you have bricked your phone, the other situations in which you might want to flash the stock rom on your device are:
  • You have installed a custom rom and want to go back to stock but don't have a nandroid backup.
  • Any feature is not working correctly and you want to be sure that it's not a software problem, then you can flash this stock rom and test if the feature still doesn't work.
  • You have installed way too many apps and mods and you want to have a fresh start.
Let me make one thing clear, I haven't tested this method yet because I don't have the device. But this method will work for sure as that's the way you flash a stock rom on a Mediatek device.

How to unbrick/ flash stock rom:

  • Install official drivers for your phone on your Windows PC (32 bit) only. If you have a 64 bit version, you can use pdanet to install drivers for your phone.
  • Download Stock ROM v1_290613 rar file.
  • Download SP Flash Tools.
  • Extract the stock rom you downloaded in the step above. Find a scatter file named something like MT6589_android_scatter_emmc.txt
  • Continue ahead from step 4 of this guide for Canvas HD (and use the corresponding files which I have referred above).
  • I don't think a TPUpgrade thing will appear on flashing this rom, as described in the guide linked above for Canvas HD. That occurred in Canvas HD because it was an OS upgrade which is not the case here.
Do let us know whether it worked out smoothly for you so that we can add a tested tag to this guide.

Micromax Canvas 4’s Blow to Unlock app pulled to work on (almost) all Android devices

$

0
Micromax’s highly advertised feature of Canvas 4, Blow to Unlock, has been ported to work on all Android devices running Android 4.0 and later. If you fancied having the Blow to Unlock feature on your device, here is your chance to have it working on your device.

Note: You might also love to have all other features of Canvas 4 on your present Android device.

The .apk (android package) file of the app which brings this features to the Canvas 4 was pulled out of the phone by xda member keanu_ritz and when tested on other android devices, it was found to be working, with a glitch here and there, which reaffirmed our belief that this feature wasn’t integrated with the system and comes to action thanks to an app developed by foneclay. It must be noted that most such software features that appear in phones from bigger brands like Samsung and HTC come tightly integrated with the phone and can’t, as a matter of fact, be installed on another phone as easily. What keanu_ritz did was fairly simple, he downloaded the stock rom for Canvas 4 and extracted the app from it. You might not believe now, but I was planning to do the same to try out a few apps, but thanks to the dumb BSNL 2G connection I use, I can’t bear the pain of downloading files as large as 500 MB.

To install the app on a device running ICS or above, do this to install the app and get it to work fine:
  • Go to Settings > Security > Screen Lock and then select the None option. If you had enabled a pattern or pin lock, you would be required to enter it once so as to change the lock type on your device.
  • Download the MUnlock.apk file on your device.
  • Install it using any file manager.
  • If you haven’t already enabled Unknown Sources, then this app won’t install on your phone unless you go to Settings > Security and tick Unknown Sources. Enabling this option means that you want to install apps from outside the play store. Once you have installed this app, you can turn this option, if you want to.
  • Go to your app drawer and click on the MUnlock app icon. Tap the lock icon so that it is locked to turn on the “Blow to Unlock” feature.

Though the app installed fine on an Android 2.2 device I own, I couldn’t get it to work fine. The phone displayed a blank screen with just the wallpaper and the notification bar as the lock screen but no instruction to unlock the screen. Surprisingly though, blowing air in the mic or shaking the phone worked well to unlock it. That means you can give it a try even if you have a phone that runs on Gingerbread or below.

A few words about the feature:

This type of lock isn’t practical at all. Suppose you are taking a stroll around the park with the phone in your hand. Obviously, the phone will get unlocked if you accidentally press the power button as the phone is also shaking and continuous blows of air would keep entering the mic of your phone, thus unlocking your phone and you might end up touching doing bizarre things on your phone without even knowing. To summarise it, this is not going to be your (at least not mine) full time lock screen.

Do let me know what you think about this app and whether it worked fine on your device.

Spice Pinnacle Mi-525 with 1.5 GHz Quad Core and Full HD screen listed on shaolic for INR 17k

It had been a while since Micromax is enjoying an upper hand in terms of smartphone market share in India. It has been even longer since we have seen a recommendable product from Spice  mobiles. A new interesting handset from Spice, named Spice Mi-525, has been listed for pre-order on Saholic with a competitive price tag on INR 16,990. The phone will be delivered in 10 business days.

Saholic is owned by the Spice Group itself, so we can trust it for the listing, but still, there has been no official unveiling of the device. According to Saholic, Spice Mi-525 will have these specifications:
  • 5 inch Full HD screen (1920x1080 resolution)
  • 1.5 GHz Mediatek MT6589T processor
  • PowerVR SGX 544MP
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 Megapixel rear camera with night vision and autofocus
  • 1080p video recording at 30 fps
  • 2 MP front camera
  • 8 GB internal memory
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • Proximity sensor, Light sensor (for automatic brightness), G-sensor (accelerometer), Gyro sensor
  • Dual SIM with 3G support on both of them
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • Dimensions: 149.4 x 74.9 x 9.3 mm
  • Weighs 175 g
As a matter of fact, Mediatek MT6589T is much better in terms of clock speed and a few other points as compared to MT6589 chipset found in Canvas 4 and many other handsets. Also, SGX 544MP GPU is significantly better than SGX 544.
Spice Mi 525 Pinnacle with EMI offer

Offer: At the time of checkout, enter PREORDER in the coupon field to pay for the phone in 12 equal EMIs of INR 1415.83

Droidiser Opinion - To go for it or not:
This phone competes directly with the Canvas 4. While Canvas 4 has a few positives in the software features it packs and probably in the Camera section, Spice Mi-525 beats it in almost every other field. Though, it would be interesting to see how a 1080p screen fares with 1 GB of RAM. At INR 17,000, it seems to be the best bet presently in the market and that too from a decent brand (given Indians still don't trust companies like Gionee and iBerry).

Top 10 Smartphones in India: July 2013

$

As long as smartphone area is concerned, first half of 2013 has been very prosperous for this segment of mobile industry. All the major companies including Nokia, Samsung, HTC, Sony etc. have launched their high-end models in the first half of 2013.
With Nexus 4 launched for Indian users, S4 coming with stock jelly beans, and rumors about iPhone 5s/6 are taking pace, it is safe to say that in second half market is going to be more competitive. In such situations, choosing the right handset usually becomes very difficult. Let me help you simply your decision by looking at top 10 mobile phones currently available in Indian market.

1. Samsung Galaxy S4:

This is obvious. That is why I did not try to keep it for last with a purpose to shock you. Yes, this beast is ruling the mobile market since its launch and has no mood to back off in near future.
wps_clip_image-14979

With Exynos 5 octa-core chipset (Although sadly, Indian users have to be satisfied on quad-core only) and 2600 mAH battery, S4 has enough fuel to run best games, render graphics, and support high-end applications. Samsung’s personalized UI over the top of Jelly Bean is sleek and smooth. Even the high price is somewhat justified with the feel this awesome device gives.

2. HTC One:

HTC’s latest phone is simply called One. With 1.7 GHz processor, powerful camera, great battery life, and slender Sense 5.0 UI, this device is undoubtedly one of the best Smartphones in market.
wps_clip_image-1514

Price wise HTC has always been expensive. However, for the experience and quality their handsets give, they are totally worth the hole they make in our pockets.

3. Google Nexus 4:

Nexus is to android lovers what iPhone is to Apple aficionados. Nexus 4 is the device with best features. Be it processor, camera or OS, you get all the high-end features in a very decent price range.
wps_clip_image-29230

With Google’s brand name behind it (So what if it is developed by LG, it is still a Google Nexus) the device is all set to rock your Android experience. In-box 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (and rumors of Nexus 4 to receive 4.3 getting louder), 2100 mAH battery, 8 MP camera with flash are some of the features, for which you have to buy this phone. Most importantly, Nexus 4 gives you as pure Android experience as there can ever be.

4. iPhone 5:

Although this device has seen some criticism since its launch, iPhone 5 still is an iPhone, and that says all. With powerful A6 dual core processor and iOS 6, this elegant device houses a 4-inch LED backlit IPS LCD display.

iphone 5

8MP camera with flash, longer battery life, high quality of material, great design, smooth UI, and most importantly the brand Apple is more than enough to woo users towards this phone.

5. Nokia Lumia 920:

Yes, Nokia is not dead. On the contrary, with its Asha and Lumia series, they are really trying hard to kick other’s asses.
wps_clip_image-13631

Lumia has stunning looks and a great OS. It is different than most of the other Smartphones in terms of looks, design, and features, and that is the biggest USP of this phone. Agreed that app community is not very active on Windows 8 platform as of yet, but it is picking up really fast. Almost all the major apps are on Windows 8 (No, not Instagram yet, sorry folks), and developers have seriously started to take interest in this new environment.

6. BB Z10:

BlackBerry has been brought back from dead and probably has given one last chance to survive. And believe me guys; they are really working hard to make use of this one last chance.
wps_clip_image-7317

With Z10, BB is trying hard to woo users, and they are getting successful in doing so. With 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 8MP camera, and 16 GB internal memory, Z10 is all set to fight with all top end handsets.

7. Samsung Galaxy Note 2:

Well, Samsung is the only brand that has two devices in this list.  This massive phablet runs on Android Jelly Bean and sports a whopping 5.5-inch super AMOLED screen.

With 1.6 GHz processor and 8MP camera, Galaxy Note 2 is powerful enough to fight with all other phones of this list.

8. Xperia Z:

5-inch full HD screen, 13MP rear camera, 1.5 GHz processor, jelly bean OS, Sony’s Bravia engine, and brilliant design by Sony. What else do you want in a mobile phone?
wps_clip_image-14982

This phone has the capability to be in top-3 spot only battery life and support would have better.

9. LG Optimus G:

Although hardware is similar to Nexus 4, LG Optimus G E975 still holds value when it comes to top-10 list.
wps_clip_image-26383

The UI is really improved, and 13MP camera adds tremendous value to this otherwise ordinary phone. Overall, it is a decent phone with all the features to qualify in this list.

10. Micromax Canvas HD A116:

This would be a real shocker for many readers but believe me, if you will take this phone in your hands once, you too will agree with me.
wps_clip_image-14326

5-inch full HD display, powerful processor, good battery life, and most importantly very light on your pocket, this device is made for those who want all the high end features in mid-price range. Well, frankly speaking all great features under 15,000/-, what else would be the ultimate dream of a normal middle class mobile user?
These are some of the great phones based on my research and experience. Which phones do you guys like and why? Please leave your comments below.

Review: Startapp is a great opportunity for Android Devs to cash in on their hard work

Startapp is one of the most talked about startups in the Android industry. And why won't it be? In just over 1 year of its service, Startup appears on over 2.87% of apps present in the play store (according to appbrain). We shall be exploring the reasons behind the success of Startapp, while reviewing it in this article here.

The opportunities to earn:

In a market dominated by Admob, the mobile advertising giant, Startapp has made a name for itself. How has that happened? Well, startapp pays the android developers, on an average, $12 per 1000 downloads of the app. Now put yourself in the seat of an Android developer who has enabled startapp monetization program on his app and the app gets downloaded a million times. My quick maths says you will earn $12,000.

Back in the real world, Startapp can be integrated in an app by using the Startapp SDK, which is quite easy to use as there are no banner ads involved, layouts of an app don't need to be edited. Only some small changes need to be done on the Java end of the app.

There are two types of Startapp SDK integration:
  • Partial SDK Integration:
This integration creates a 1x1 icon at the user's home screen and changes the home page of the stock Android browser. If you are an Android developer, you would want to use this option if you or your users find the next option a bit too intrusive.

    Partial SDK Integration Payment Rates

    New US Users

    $0.04 per install

    New Non-US Users

    $0.008 per install

    Returning Users

    $0.003 per install
  • In addition to the advertisements present in the partial integration, bookmarks are added to the user's bookmarks list on the stock android browser. As an added bonus, android developers earn a better payment per app download using this type of integration.

    Full SDK Integration Payment Rates

    New US Users

    $0.055 per install

    New Non-US Users

    $0.01 per install

    Returning Users

    $0.01 per install
Apart from the advertising types presented in the two SDK integration methods detailed above, Startapp has recently rolled out Exit ads. As the name suggests, these ads are full screen and appear once a user exits an app by pressing the Back or Home button. These mobile exit ads generally link to a mobile website or a free app download. Exit ads are integrated separately into the app using the Exit ad SDK.

The other opportunities to earn using Startapp includes referring your developer friends over to Startapp. And if you are an android developer, you might already be having contacts with other Android developers out there and thus referring them to Startapp can get you some extra rewards.

For every Android developer you introduce to Startapp, you will earn according to the following table:

Startapp Referral Program

100 app downloads

$10

100,000 app downloads

+$100

500,000 app downloads

+$600

1,000,000 app downloads

+$1800

That means, if you drive a really capable android developer to the Startapp monetization program, you can earn up to $2510 from a single app of his that gets to the one million download mark.

The User Experience Factor:

For any type of mobile monetization an app developer decides to use on his/her app, the first and foremost thing that comes into mind is how the ad will alter the user experience.

This is what the Exit ads look like
Startapp brings an interesting new type of monetization program in which all the advertising stays outside the app, so, your free app stays totally ad free. This provides for an excellent in-app user experience. Secondly, the developers can choose what types of ads they want to integrate in your app. For instance, if they receive negative feedback from the users about exit ads, they can easily remove the exit ads alone and continue with other ads. Also, this can act as another source of earning since it can work in perfect combination with admob, where admob serves ads within the app and Startapp adds the bookmarks and other things outside the app.

On the user end, I specially liked the transparency factor of Startapp. Every app that uses its SDK has to display a message in the description explaining that they are using Startapp for monetization and what it means to the user. Also, there is a license agreement popup from startapp that appears when the app is launched for the first time which explains what types of ad the user will see.

I have personally seen a lot of one star ratings on apps using Airpush platform, for Airpush is really intrusive and sends notification bar ads, something that users don't like. In the case of Startapp, there are limited number of ads. Even when the developer uses the full suite of ads along with exit ads, the only time ads are visible are when the user exits the app, or go to the search icon created on the home screen and in the default browser. The latter two parts can be removed manually by the users, if they want to. That's very clean, to say the least.

Probably the only thing that didn't impress me about the Startapp SDK is the number of permissions your app needs to have once you have enabled Startapp monetization on it. Many users pay a lot of attention to the permissions required by an app. This issue can be somewhat solved by explaining why the permissions are needed in the app description.

Bonus: If you sign up using our affiliate link, you will get a bonus of $25 when you reach 100 app downloads. (I shall get $10 when you reach that number of downloads.)

Summary:

If you are an android developer and are not satisfied with the earnings you are making out of your apps, then you must give Startapp a try. If your app is downloaded in good numbers in the USA, then Startapp will make a very good choice for you. As a user of quite a few apps on my android device that use startapp, this advertisement strategy looks cleaner to me and the advertisements I see are very less irritating than having banner ads fill up the screen when you are using the app. To see how the startapp ads actually work in practice, install this app from the play store that demoes the functionality of the mobile monetization platform. Whether you are an android developer or a user, do let us know what you think about Startapp.

Rogers Moto X shows off its features in what appears to be an official video

In a recently leaked video, which appears to be shot professionally, we get to see the Moto X in its full glory. The HD video shows off the phone's new features, like always on voice command system (probably named Moto Magic) which can be used to access commonly used features without using your fingers. We still aren't sure though whether these features will be Motorola specific or will be available in the next Android update.

The leaked video shows a Canadian carrier Rogers' version of the phone. As per the video, Moto X's camera can be activated by a double twist gesture, with no need to turn on the screen for this. In the camera app, tapping anywhere on the screen (obviously, except wher the controls lie) captures a still, while holding anywhere on the screen will initiate a burst shot.

This Always On functionality is also seen in the voice command system of the upcoming phone, which can be activated anytime by saying OK Moto Magic. This command seems to be in line with Google's voice command across its other products like Google Glass (OK Glass) and in Google Maps' recent update (OK Maps).

Here's the video for your watching pleasure. It was originally uploaded on Google Plus. (G+ is much better than Facebook, really. If only it had some people using it!)

If you haven't been catching up with the the Moto X saga lately, according to a report, Google will spend half a billion dollars in marketing the Motorola Moto X. We don't know how much money is going to be used, but one thing for sure, these leaks and rumors are adding some great (and free) value to Moto X's popularity among its potential buyers.

As per a recent poll, Moto X is the most awaited smartphone right now with 43% of votes against competitors such as Galaxy Note 3 and LG Optimus G2. We too started a similar poll on our blog, but as the majority of our readers are Indians, they seemed to be more inclined towards the Micromax Canvas 4 :P (This poll was strted before Canvas 4 was launched).

Exclusive: We've got a clue what Android 5 Key Lime Pie might look like!

No, we don’t have an insider at Google and this isn’t a leak. We are guessing what the UI of Android 5 might look like based on what’s happening around us. It has been some time since Google has started moving away from the Holo design in the updates it has been pushing to the apps in the Google Suite. Don't know why, but in my personal opinion, the design guidelines we are seeing in the updates of these Google apps can well form the base of the major UI overhaul we are expecting in Android 5 Key Lime Pie.

So, what is the design guideline Google has been recently started following? Take a look at the few snapshots below to get an idea of the design shift we are talking about:

Gmail
Google Plus
Google Play Books
Google Drive

Google Play Movies & TV

Google Play Store

Google Music
Google Keep

Did you note that not all the apps above are brimming with colors. Some, like Google Play Books and Google Movies have been assigned a single color?

If our theory is right, we are going to see a major change in the looks of the Android 5 UI and it might be as colorful as iOS 7 is. Now, as I don’t want any Apple fanboy to react that Google is copying Apple, Google has been colorful since its present logo was launched. Google Plus has been full of colors since its beginning and the first Google app that shifted towards this design guideline that we currently have on the majority of the Google App suite was launched much before Apple’s unveiling of the iOS 7. If my personal memory is any good, the recent design change of Google Play Store implemented different colors for Apps, Books, Movies and Music section. This trend was then followed by apps like Google Music, Gmail and Hangouts.

In most of these recently updated apps, a swipe from the left  brings in a menu with the options for that particular app. This hints on the fact that we might see some kind of gestures built in to the Stock Android 5. Again, this is only a speculation and we don't know anything for sure. This was that I had been personally observing with the updates Google has been pushing all this while.

Sorry, but I am not an artist so couldn't put up my imagination in to an imaginative screenshot. But I know you know what I am imagining Android 5 to look like. Something more colorful.

What are your thoughts? Would you love a more colorful approach on Android rather than the present darkish Holo theme? Let us (and Google) know in the comments section.

Tip: Extract any App or Game’s apk to get fonts, pictures, sounds and more

$

The apk file of an application or game is nothing but a zip file full of all the resources the app uses, which most of the times include sounds, pictures and fonts. So, if you had a very cure sound in a game that you always wanted to set as your ringtone, now you know how you can do so.

How to extract Sounds, Pictures and Fonts  from an APK file:

On your PC:

  • First of all, you need to have the apk of the app you are planning to extract. You can find the apk of almost any app by doing a quick google search with the term "Application_name apk”. If you want to play it safe, you can install any app or game from Play Store to your device and then pull the apk of that app from your device. Obviously, the first option is easier but we leave the choice to you.
Note: Download 7zip for 32 bit Windows here. For 64 bit version, download this.
  • In the video shared above, I am using 7zip on my p to extract the apk files. Though WinZip and WinRAR can do this job equally well, it will require you to rename your *.apk files to *.zip file to extract them. That adds an extra hassle of renaming the files to zip and then back to apk to actually use it as an android application. Also, 7zip is totally free and open source.
  • Right click on the apk file you want to extract/unarchive, go to the 7zip dropdown menu and choose extract to application_name. This will extract all the files of the archived apk in a new folder named _application_name. Yyou will find all major files that that app uses in the /assets folder.
  • If you haven’t installed 7zip, you will have to rename the apk files to zip otherwise an extract option won’t appear.
Watch this screencast video to know how to do this on a Windows PC with 7zip.

On your Android device itself:

  • If you don’t have access to a pc or don’t want to boot it up for such a small task, you can extract and use the files from your phone itself.
  • First of all, install a good file manager app. ES File Explorer is our favorite. It is free and it comes with built in zip manager.
  • We are stating the exact steps to follow in the latest version of ES File Explorer. In other file managers, the steps might differ a bit.
  • Just like 7zip on PC, ES File Explorer doesn’t require you to rename the apk file first to zip and then back to apk. Other file explorers might require you to do so.
  • In ES File Explorer, locate the apk of the app/game you want to extract. Use this guide to find where the apk file might be located.
  • Long press on the apk file and then click on the More button present on the screen. Then press the Extract To option and select the location where you want to extract the files of the apk archive.
  • Find everything you want out of those files in /assets folder.

Is it legal to use the extracted files:

Though you should consider consult a lawyer for this, I don’t think that using the files for your personal use (like the ones I mentioned above) are going to get you sued. Obviously, these files are copyrighted to them, so any use on business level must be avoided.

Do let me know how you made use of this tip. Here are some of the best extractions I have made:
  • Brainwave Tuner is an app that plays white noise to help us concentrate and to cure head ache etc. In the whole list of white noise sounds, I found only one of them soothing. Also, my phone with just 140 MB internal memory appreciates me whenever I uninstall any app. So, I extracted that particular sound, uninstalled that app and played it in my Music Player!
  • I liked a few fonts in PicSay Pro photo editing apps. Other fonts I adore were extracted from Google Keep and Google Now.
  • I used the cute sounds of the crocodile (or was it an alligator?) from the Where’s my Water as my notification tone.
  • I used the meme images and fonts present in Meme Generator app to create memes on my PC.
Don’t forget to share the crazy things you find deep inside your favorite apps!

How to Unbrick, Unroot and Fix heating problem on Micromax A89 (3-in-1 Guide)

$

Once upon a time, we had covered the rooting and clockworkmod flashing procedures for Micromax A89 Ninja. Since then, we have seen the launch of a flurry of  new devices from Micromax. But thanks to the Almighty, Micromax remembered that they had launched a device called the Micromax A89 and listening to their customer's complaints, released a silent but official update for the handset. Though the newer devices would have come with the updated rom and thus no heating problem, those who had bought the device earlier were left to suffer. But as long as the developer community is alive and kicking, such biasing can't occur, can it? In this guide, we shall show you how you can solve your Micromax A89's heating problem. The steps followed in this very guide can also help you unbrick your phone in case one of your mischievous actions rendered you a useless brick.

Also, as the file you are flashing is official, this won't void your manufacturer warranty. In fact, it will restore your warranty in case you have lost it by rooting it.

Changes in Stock ROM v3:

Changes over Stock ROM v2:
  • Removed M! Store

Changes over Stock ROM v1:

  • Fixed Over heating issues.
  • Fixed Charging Cutoff
As you can see, the only difference in Stock ROM v2 and Stock ROM v3 is the absence of M! Store in the latter. I don't think that would be reason enough to do all the work involved in the updating below.
A snap of the about phone screen
on Stock ROM v2
So, proceed ahead only if you have a bricked device or if you want to unroot it or your device is still on stock rom v1.
How to know which version of Stock ROM you are running:
To check which version of Stock ROM your device is currently running, go to Settings > About Phone and then look at Build Number. If the build number written there is:
  1. LWDEB01.1.2_MD10
Then your A89 is running Stock ROM v3
  2. LWDEB01.1.1_MD10
Then your A89 is running Stock ROM v2
Else, your device is still stuck on Stock ROM v1 and you should follow this guide.

How to Flash Stock ROM v3 on Micromax A89 Ninja:

  • Download and install USB and VCOM drivers for your Micromax A89 on your PC. You can skip this step if you are sure that you have already installed drivers for your device.
  • Download the LWDEB01.1.0.1.2T12A0308_MD10.zip file. Extract this file anywhere you like.
  • Download the SP Flash tools. This tool is required to flash mediatek devices. Extract and run SP Flash Tool.
  • In SP Flash tool, click the Scatter-Loading button. This will open a window where you have to locate the scatter loading file for your device. This file can be found in the rom folder you extracted in step 2 and is named something like MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt
  • Press the Download button in the Flash tool. It is present next to Format and Firmware > Upgrade buttons.
  • Switch off your phone and pull out its battery. After a while, place the battery back in and connect your device to the computer in the same state.
  • After a while, yellow progress bar will appear on your screen indicating that the process has been initiated. When the progress bar fills to 100%, then a green circle will appear on top of the SP Flash Tool window with the message "Download OK". This implies that the flashing process was successful.
  • Disconnect your phone and reboot it.
  • Go to Settings > About Phone and check that the Build Number is now LWDEB01.1.2_MD10
Note: If you wanted to restore your warranty, but had installed clockworkmod recovery on your A89 in addition to rooting it, see this guide to install stock recovery. Follow the exact same steps as mentioned in that guide but flash this file instead of the one mentioned there.

In case you had a rooted device and want to root it once again, here is the rooting guide for Micromax A89, that will still work equally well.

Web Version of Google Play Store gets refreshed, Now-esque look

The web version of Google's Play Store has received a much needed upgrade in terms of both its look and functionality. This morning, when I was fumbling around on Google and ended up on Play Store, this sweet surprise welcomed me. The new look of the Play Store will surely be appreciated by many Android fans, as the new update makes browsing through the various aspects of any app easier.

Here are the few changes that I noticed there:

  • Roboto font rules over the entire Play Store. Roboto is the same font family that is used in many other places including the later versions of Android.
  • The screenshots as well as the reviews fill up the screen when you click on the Arrow button to see more of them.
  • The new Play Store design uses Asynchronous Javascript and XML (aka AJAX) which makes it possible to reload only those parts of the page that have changed, thus speeding the entire process.
  • All the tabs like What's New, Description, Permissions etc. are now merged up. Description and What's New section appear on the same page while to view the permissions required you have to hit the Install button once, which will provide you with the option to select which device you want to install the app to and a list of all permissions sorted under some relevant groups.
  • This update mainly focuses on looks as of now. Many filtering options that used to be present in comments section and when you searched for an application are now gone.
  • When you search for an app, you will get only 48 results. There is no option to view more results- no more results loading screen, no next page option, nothing. This seems weird and confirms our belief that this update isn't final and though the look will be the same in near future, Google will have to bring some features back.
  • The previous maximum number of downloads Play Store used to show was 100,000,000+ i.e. above 100 million downloads. All apps with more than that number of downloads were present in the same bracket. Apparently, there doesn't seem to be any upper limit with apps like Facebook showing 100,000,000-500,000,000 downloads. The only app that I could find in the above 500 million and below 1 billion category is the Gmail app.
  • The My Apps option now brings all the apps you have ever installed on all your Android devices you have ever linked to your Google account. While we love to see what all apps we have installed till date, these should be sortable by devices and whether we currently have them installed on any deice or not. Otherwise, I hardly see any use of this list except for the fact that you can count how many apps you have ever installed on your device.
For those of you who are feeling too lazy to hit the Play Store or aren't currently on your desktop, enjoy the screenshots below.

Why Android phones are good for gaming

$

Everybody owns a mobile phone these days and because of this nearly everybody is played a game or two on their phone while bored and waiting for something. It used to be that you could only play games such as snake on your mobile phone however these days there are thousands of games to choose from on modern mobile phones, many of which are free to play. In order to find these games we have to use is your phone’s inbuilt App Store, or you can go online using the web browser and find great games at the online casinos because of the mobile device support recently implemented in many online casino websites. These websites you can instantly play games without having to download them so you can get straight into casino game fun.

There are many different types of mobile phones however one of the most popular is the Android phone which is a phone with the Google made Android operating system installed on it. There are hundreds of phones available with this operating system that is constantly being updated and improved. In order to play games you might want to invest in one of the higher end phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 which has incredible specifications for a mobile phone and rivals some many PCs in terms of sheer power.

With this every game at an online casino like LuckyNuggetCasino.com/au or other will run smoothly and the great fun to play. Google Android operating system is different from many others due to just how open it is, what this allows is for gaming developers to do much more of what they want with the phone instead of being confined to only using certain resources. This means that games developed for android are often more technical than on other platforms.

Forgot your Android’s Pattern/Password? Use these 5 methods to regain access

$

I have been in the following conversation at least a hundred times literally.
They: “Hey bro, I have forgot my pattern/password. Even worse, I also don’t have access to the google account I have tied to my phone. How can I get it back?”
Me: “Boot your phone to recovery mode and reset it.”
They: “Aww… I have to lose all my data :(“
Me: “Yep.”
I am a person with a soft heart and listening to that aww in the second last dialogue dampens it. That’s when I decided to find a solution to this solution that keeps popping up again and again. Let’s solve it for once and for all.

The Problem:

The problem arises when the combination of these three things occur:
  • You have forgotten your password/PIN/pattern.
  • You don’t remember the password of the Google account you have set up on the device.
  • You don’t want to loose your data. Opting for the factory reset method means that your internal memory will be formatted which mainly includes all your user apps and their data.
If you don't want to read all the story and just want to get to the solution, here are the 5 methods that will get your Android device back, in an unlocked state! By the way, all the first 3 methods given there have been crafted by me.

How I got to the solution:

So, I started scouring all the files my Android phone has. As my Android phone is rooted, I can literally access any file. Two files which a rang a bell in my soft heart were the Gesture.key and Password.key file present in the /data/system folder on my Android 2.2 phone. I cross checked the presence of the very same files on my Android 4.1.2 tablet, which comes from a different manufacturer. This confirmed that these files were universally present on all Android devices, from one of the oldest versions to one of the latest versions.

Changing the screen protection to password or pattern brought change in the file size of these files. This, along with the name of the files i.e. gesture.key and password.key led me to the conclusion that these are the two files which store the lock information on the Android platform. A quick deletion of these files cleared the lock protection, bringing the simple slide to unlock lock screen. However, having access to these files and modifying them requires your Android device to be rooted. If you aren’t rooted, don’t exit this article just now, we have an option for non-root users too. No bedtime story about how I got a solution for non-root users.

Stop all the nonsense, gimme the solution:

I know many of you are getting impatient to regain access to your Android device with forgotten password. As there are more type of Android devices than the different wavelengths of different colors, not all methods will work on all phones. Some of these problems could be worked out by discussions and discussions are better off in a place like a forum. We have a forum for our blog, in fact, We is the forum where you’d actually find all the different methods that can help you get back your locked Android phone/tablet.
Here is the topic you should be heading to, right now!

Annoyed by the "USB Debugging Connected" Notification? Get rid of it in 2 minutes

$
0
0
Whenever I connect my phone to the PC, the notification bar gets filled up. Why? There's always a "USB Debugging Connected", "Turn On USB Storage" and a few other application specific notifications lying there.  Though we can turn off the application specific notifications in the newer versions of Android, some of these applications will become useless without those persistent notifications. So, I had to concentrate on getting rid of the "USB Debugging Connected" notification. This tutorial will let you do the same, in the time it will take you to get a bowl of Maggi ready- 2 minutes.

Why does this notification appear:
If you are unsure why this notification pops up every time you insert that little USB cable in your phone, this message appears when you have enabled the USB Debugging option and connect your phone to the PC. THe phone shows this message indicating that any Debugging actions can now be performed on the phone via the PC and the notification acts as a shortcut to disabling the USB Debugging option. But keeping USB Debugging always on is one of the things we recommend to every Android user. So, turning it off isn't the solution.

How to Hide USB Debugging Notification:

  • First of all, you need to have a rooted device. Sorry to those who are eliminated by this criterion. But hiding USB Debugging Notification isn't the only reason why you may want to root, we have piled up a list of several others here.
  • If you don't already have one, install a file manager with root access. ES File Explorer is one of our personal favorites. It's free and packs a ton of handy features.
  • Open the File Manager you installed and go to /system. For newbies, going to /system would require you to first go to the root of your phone i.e. / and then jump to the System folder there.
  • Long press the file named build.prop there and open it in any test editor of your choice. If you installed ES File Explorer, you can use its in-built text editor.
  • Look if you already have this line in the file:
    persist.adb.notify=1
If you haven't ever tweaked your build.prop file earlier and haven't installed a custom rom, you probably won't find this line. Still, you should look for this line, as I can't guess what will happen if you have two lines asking the file to do contrasting things.
Back to the topic, if you already have this line, change it to:
    persist.adb.notify=0
  • If you didn't already have that line, jump to the end of your build.prop and add this line:
    persist.adb.notify=0
  • Save changes to this file and reboot your phone. Connect your phone to the PC and check if you still find the "USB Debugging Connected" notification.
If you did everything like described above, I can't think of anything that will cause that dreaded notification to appear on your phone again.

These 6 methods will help you unbrick any Android Device

$

Any Android device can get bricked when you perform advanced actions like flashing a custom rom or rooting the phone. The fear of bricking their device keeps many Android users from going advanced and thus prevents them from enjoying the many perks of rooting. Prevention is better than cure, they say. So, first, we shall talk about various precautions following which can help you prevent turning your phone into a brick. And if you have already bricked your phone, we shall also tell you some secret ways to get your phone up and running, like it did in the good ol' days.

How to prevent bricking your Android device:

  • Never ever flash anything that is not meant for your device. If you are not sure whether something is meant for your device, post a comment. You might sound stupid at places, but isn't that better than bricking your device? In the Android world, only apps and a few other generic zips are the only things that works good on all devices. Unless it's explicitly mentioned that the stuff you are looking at will work on all devices, don't risk trying it. This is one of the first and foremost things I expect every Android user to know before they start performing any android tutorial on their device.
  • Keep USB Debugging enabled on your device. This will help you unbrick it if something bad happens. Here's how to do that across various Android versions:
    • On Android 2.3 and below, go to Settings > Applications > Development. Tick the USB Debugging Checkbox to enable it.
    • On Android 4.0 and 4.1, go to Settings > Developer Options and enable USB Debugging from there.
    • On Android 4.2, go to Settings > About Phone. In this screen, find something called Build number. Tap on it seven times to unlock Developer Options on your device. Then, follow the instructions for Android 4.0 and 4.1
  • Take a nandroid backup. A nandroid backup of a device is the full backup of your android phone which can be restored at any point of time to bring it back to the same state when it was backed up. Obviously, when you backup your device, it is not bricked. And when it gets bricked and you restore the nandroid backup, it is not bricked! To take a nandroid backup of your device, you need to have a custom recovery like clockworkmod or TWRP. As an extra step of precaution, copy the backup files to your computer's hard disk or at any other place you consider safe so that you don't end up accidentally deleting them from your sd card.
These were the main things that you should help you prevent bricking your device. But what if the accident has already occurred?

How to Unbrick any Android device:

  • Take it to the Service Center. You might be considering me a fool right now because I am the one who is yelling before many tutorials that this will void your manufacturer warranty. But believe me, if your phone doesn't a binary counter (like the ones found in a few Samsung devices) and you haven't  unlocked your bootloader, the service center guys are not going to know whether you ever rooted your phone. In the first place, many service centers don't even check if your Android device was rooted. They simply flash the stock things back and hand it over to you. I am saying this with my personal experience. When I first soft bricked my Spice Android mobile about two years ago and had no idea about unbricking it, I took it to the service center and they very happily returned me the phone in its factory state.
  • If your device has a custom recovery like clockworkmod and you had taken a nandroid backup, restore it.
  • If your device has a custom recovery but you never bothered to take a nandroid backup (that's so careless of you), look around the internet for any custom rom for your device and flash it using the custom recovery on your device.
  • If you haven't flashed a custom recovery on your device, google around for a method to do so on your device. For a method to flash clockworkmod recovery on a Samsung Galaxy Y, I would search the term "how to flash clockworkmod recovery galaxy y" or something like that. In the guide you find, see if the steps can be performed on a bricked phone. I shall drop you a hint. The guides which state the use of stock recovery or fastboot or tools like SP Flash tools or Odin to flash the custom recovery can be performed on a device that's bricked.
  • If everything stated above fails, google for the process to flash stock rom on your Android device. Doing this can be done using different tools on different devices. Some of them are: RUU for HTC, Odin for Samsung, SP Flash Tools for most Mediatek devices.
  • Still confused? Head over to the xda forums and post in your device's section for an answer. If your device doesn't have a separate forum, post in the Android Q&A section. Though we have our very own Android community here, I recommended xda over it because right now, our community is very small and xda has already millions of members. So, till our community grows up, head over to the xda community.
As you might have understood y no, this guide was a generic one and applies to every android device. Otherwise, I am 100% sure, there can't be a single guide that will work on every Android device under the Sun. With this guide, our purpose was to show you a starting path.

Increase Mediatek MT6575 & MT6577 Internal Storage (app install space) using Data repartition tool

For rooted Android phones, there are countless mods that can help users increase their internal memory. One of the most beneficial ones I have found are Link2sd (based on a2sd script) and swapping the internal and external sd card. While Link2sd method works best for phones which don't have an internal sd card, swapping internal and external sd card is a good option for those who want to install big games which requires lots of sd data.

Difference between Internal storage, Internal sd card, External sd card:

Many of you might be confused about what these these terms refer to. External sd card obviously refers to the sd card you put in the external sd card slot in your phone. Internal storage is the space in which applications are installed. Internal storage location is universal and *is* present in every Android device. External sd card is present in all devices that come with a slot for external sd cards. Internal sd card, on the other hand, comes in comparatively newer android devices, and are always present in devices with no external sd cards. Internal sd card is used for storage of data of the games installed and for moving apps to the sd card if that option is selected for a particular app. In devices which have total internal storage above 2 GB almost always have an internal sd card.

What's the best option to have maximum possible space for apps and sd data?

When you decide to swap your internal and external sd card, you have lots of space for sd data of games and for storing apps' data. Your internal storage stays as it was, at anywhere from 512 MB -1 GB. If this much storage isn't enough for you, you can use your internal sd card's memory as your internal storage. To do this, we have to repartition the phone's total internal memory.

Repartitioning internal storage and swapping internal sd card with external sd card when used together will give you the max possible space for both, installing apps and storing their data.

Note: Backup your appsand data before following anything given below.; We won't be responsible for any damages. DOn't try this if you don't have a MT657x device.

How to increase internal storage on your MT657x phone:

Jaydvn (xda) created a tool called MT657x repartition tool. This tool works only on Mediatek devices with either MT6575 or MT6577 chipsets. Here are the steps you need to follow to use this tool to increase your app installation space.
  • Download the app from the original source or mirror.
  • Install the app as you usually do.
  • Grant superuser permissions when asked.
  • Choose the size you want your internal storage to be. Make sure that this isn't more than the total internal space your phone has. To know that, go to Settings > Storage and add up all the storage space there except external sd card.
  • In the pop up that appears, tap the highlighted button.
The message means (as translated by Google Translate):
    Confirm/ Determine
Click Dong y to confirm Memory changes.
Dong y means that you confirm the action, while Huy probably means No. Google translate provided silly translations for these two
  • For changes to take effect, you have to boot into recovery and click Factory Reset/ Wipe Data.
  • To boot into recovery, select reboot recovery from the app. This will cause another pop up to appear which says:
In recovery, select Wipe Data/ Factory reset to complete the process of memory division.
Press the Dong button to confirm the reboot.
  • Once you reboot in recovery, do as told above i.e. Factory Reset your device from there.
  • Reboot your phone and go to Settings > Storage and confirm that the changes have took effect.
Some phones on which this tool will work:
  • Micromax A110
  • Micromax A89
  • Micromax A72
  • Micromax A91
  • Micromax A88
Feel free to try it on your android device if you are sure that it runs on a mediatek Mt657x chipset, where the x can be any number. To know what chipset your pone is powered by, either check it specs on gsmarena and if your phone is not listed there, install Quadrant app from Play Store and view detailed info about your device using this app.

Do let us know how you are going to use the extra app installation space you just used. Also, share this article with your friends who might own a device powered by a Mediatek MT657x chipset.
